Edward Michael Grylls is a British adventurer, TV presenter, and a writer. He has written survival books like ‘Mud, Sweat And Tears,’ ‘Your Life – Train for it,’ ‘A Survival Guide For Life’ and many more. He also has a hit Discovery show up his sleeve called “Man Vs Wild,” which shows survival tactics in various threatening situations. At the age 35, in July 2009, he was entitled as the youngest Chief Scout in history.


Bear Grylls was born on 7 June 1974 in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland. Since his childhood, he has been very active in sports and other extracurricular activities. After four years since his birth, his parents moved to Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. His nickname “Bear” came from his sister Lara Fawcett (tennis coach) when Edward was just a week old. In the year 2000, he married to Shara Cannings Knight and had three sons – Marmaduke Mickey Percy Grylls, Jesse Grylls & Huckleberry Edward Jocelyne Grylls.


His father and mother – Sir Michael Grylls and Lady Sarah Grylls were Conservative politicians. His father was in the department of cash-for-questions affairs and his mother is the daughter of Patricia Ford, a politician. Grylls’ father was a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, a prestigious honor.  And from an early age, he used to go sailing and climbing with him. In his teenage years, he learned skydiving and earned a second dan black belt in Shotokan karate. He is multilingual and speaks languages like English, French, and Spanish.


He went to Ludgrove School to complete his schooling and then went to Eton College from where he graduated in Hispanic Studies. Grylls is a believer and once told his religion as the backbone of his life. After he completed his studies in the University of England, he went to hike in the Himalayan glaciers and in the mountains of Sikkim and West Bengal. He once expressed his desire to join the Indian Army, just so he can be close to Himalayan region and can reach it’s summit. Which he did at the age of 23, and became one of the youngest climbers to achieve this task.


He served in the British Army for three years from 1994 to 1997. Army specialized him in the fields like survival, climbing, unarmed combat, desert and winter warfare, parachuting and explosives. His time in the army ended after he got himself in an accident in Kenya. It was a parachute accident in which he suffered multiple injuries in his spinal cord.


Bear Grylls is also a motivational speaker, speaking in churches, schools, corporation, and organizations.
